Why Difficult Ceramic Components Need A Co-Development Route
Difficult ceramic component projects don’t always begin with a settled production brief.
A drawing can describe the component as it stands. It doesn’t explain the design decisions behind it, or why the current material or manufacturing route is being questioned.

Before CHAMP is reviewed as a possible route, Hydra needs to understand the requirement behind the component. The customer defines what the part has to achieve in use. Hydra assesses whether CHAMP is a relevant route to investigate.
A Build Request Can Be Too Narrow
A request to make a ceramic part can sound like a clear brief when the shape has already been defined.
For difficult components, the drawing may only show the current version of the part. It may have been designed around another material, or shaped by a manufacturing route that has already introduced compromise.
Treating the enquiry as a straight build can push the project towards an output before the manufacturing question has been properly defined.
Hydra first needs to understand whether the customer is asking for a finished part, or whether the route itself still needs to be developed. The first stage may need to focus on one area of the component before a larger build is considered. In other cases, the design may need to be reviewed before machine work is scoped.
The build has value when it helps answer the question behind the project.
The Application Sets The Limits
The customer understands what the component has to do in use.
One surface may have no room to change because it affects fit. Another detail may exist because the previous manufacturing route required it. Both appear in the drawing, but they don’t have the same importance.
Hydra needs to understand where the component is fixed by the application and where there may be room for adjustment.
Changing the wrong feature can move the part away from its purpose. Treating every feature as fixed can make the ceramic route more restrictive than it needs to be.
A co-development project separates the requirement from the current design response. The requirement is what the component still has to achieve. The design response may need to change as the ceramic route is developed.
CHAMP Is Reviewed Against The Component
CHAMP is Hydra’s Ceramic Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Platform.
The process combines paste extrusion with green-state machining before sintering. It gives Hydra a route for forming a near-net ceramic shape and refining selected features before the material reaches its final fired state.

The First Stage Needs To Be Agreed With The Customer
The first stage may not be the full component.
A focused trial may be more useful if the main uncertainty sits in one area of the design. A design review may be needed if the part carries assumptions from another manufacturing method.
Hydra and the customer define the purpose of the first stage before work begins.
The result can then be reviewed against the component requirement. It may support the route as planned, or show that the design needs to change before the next stage.
The Drawing May Need To Change
The original drawing isn’t automatically the final ceramic design.
Some details may need to stay because the application depends on them. Others may be linked to the previous material or manufacturing route.
Development work helps identify which parts of the design are carrying the requirement and which parts are carrying old process decisions.
The route may change as the component is better understood. A feature may need a different approach. A design compromise may no longer be needed once the ceramic route is reviewed.
For difficult ceramic components, the aim isn’t to preserve the original drawing at all costs. The aim is to protect what the component has to achieve.
Co-Development Before Production
